DJ Wave

About DJ Wave

Late 2002, Richard Mutua (DJ Wave) and James Mutuku (Frozen ID) fell in love with making beats and then rapped over them for fun. This became the norm until after a youth camp organized by AIC Ngong Rd. After the event, Frozen ID and DJ Wave were recruited by Mission Driven (MD); Kenyas finest Gospel Hip Hop Group at the time. This is when the two became more serious with their music and started recording on a tape recorder just to have a so-called debut album. Around the same time, Rich was still in high school with Elysé Ndayihimbaze (Pepe Haze), a long-time homie. After a couple of rap battles, the two were recognized by the crew as the best rappers at Rosslyn Academy. The announcement angered other Rappers that had been battling longer than Pepe Haze and DJ Wave. And not long after the announcement, a duel between the two rappers and fellow colleagues emerged. The deal was that whoever was to come out with the best track in a period of two months; would have earned the right to be called the best Rap crew at Rosslyn Academy. This came as a shock to everyone, since Rich and Elysé were not a crew. Even though the two were close homies, when it came to rapping the two were practically rivals. They were as discontent as the rest about the announcement due to sharing the title. However after seeing that everyone was against them, the two decided to set their differences aside and take on the challenge. November 3rd 2003, they finished working on the track. The single entitled Break of Dawn received great feedback from the Rosslyn community and in turn silenced the critics. Seeing that there was no response from the challengers, Pepe Haze and DJ Wave forgot about the bet and carried on recording. December 2004, they linked up with 50 Bob (also a rapper at Rosslyn Academy) and produced a dual album entitled Brothahood for charity. During the making of the album, DJ Wave connected Pepe Haze and Frozen I.D. They made a track together, and after that, as many say; the rest is history. The Paramedikz came to be, and a few months later, Brothahood was finally launched to the public. By April 2005, the album had sold over a hundred copies at Rosslyn Academy. It was a great success; the CD featured various hit singles including the famous Rosslyn Banquet, Candle Light and The 50 Bob Anthem. May 2005, DJ Wave graduated from Rosslyn Academy. September that year, Haze continued marketing The Paramedikz at Rosslyn, while DJ Wave and Frozen I.D focused more on Mission Driven matters. Haze, in his search for another partner after DJ Waves departure, he encountered Laura Nicholas (Lead singer in the Rosslyn worship team) and a month later, she joined The Paramedikz. Shortly after, the group began working on their first solo album entitled Destined For Greatness. By this time, The Paramedikz had earned immense respect from the Rosslyn community and a lot was expected of them. Therefore, the group felt obligated to record a professional album in order not to disappoint their fans. November 2005, they started looking for studios around Nairobi who could record their music for a low price and at the same time respect the different style they were bringing. Next Level Studios came into the picture and The Paramedikz recorded their first single, "Struggles". They also recorded the original copies of "It's all good" and "Respect" featuring Haggis but they were never put on the album because of unavoidable circumstances. "Struggles" received some radio play, but was not really publicized. Later that year around December, Next Level Studios closed down and The Paramedikz joined forces with Soundland Studios. Ken Ngao (Wu Kid) soon joined the crew and had a small feature in Destined 4 Greatness. in May 2006, the vastly anticipated Destined for Greatness was released. 200 Albums were sold the weekend of the launch at Rosslyn Academy.
